Rasasutra

‘Rasas’ are the basis of all Indian art - from the earliest Sanskrit plays to Kathakali dance-theatre to Hindustani music - and yes, even today’s Bollywood movies.

A Rasa is a specific emotion evoked in an audience by an artist. There are 9 (nava) rasas in all, and they were first delineated in the Natyashastra, an ancient work of dramatic theory.

Between them, these Navarasas cover all facets of aesthetic appreciation. A seasoned artist can evoke these emotions at will; providing the ‘rasika’ (aesthete) with a form of catharsis quite similar to Greek theatre.

Rasvihar (vihar=abode) is conceived as a sanctuary, and a quest, for artistic expression. The artist, of course, is at the centre of the entire enterprise.

Jewellery design, based on the navarasas, forms the heart of Rasvihar. Jewellery created by an artist, exclusively crafted for the woman of the world.
